When she was 13 years old, she was recruited to perform at the Plantation Club in New York. After several auditions, she finally got a role in the chorus line of “Shuffle Along”, a 1921 Broadway magazine. Baker died in 1975 and her funeral attracted more than 20,000 visitors. She posthumously received all French military honors, making her the first woman born in the United States to do so.
